What is the Bulbous Tip of the Nose? – Rhinoplasty, Columbus Ohio

Hello, I’m Dr. Michael Sullivan, a facial plastic surgeon at the Sullivan Center for plastic and cosmetic surgery in Columbus, Ohio and I specialize in Rhinoplasty Surgery.

I’m going to talk a little bit about the bulbous tip. Well, what is a bulbous tip? Oftentimes, when patients refer to that term bulbous tip they are referring to the fact that the tip of the nose is broad, it’s wide its ill-defined maybe fleshy appearing. I’ve drawn out here the lower layer of cartilages of the nose that make up the tip. The nostrils would be here, and the skin drapes over the top of the tip of the nose as designated there. So this is the base of the nose. You’re looking straight up at the nose.

Oftentimes when people have a bulbous tip, it is these cartilages that are broad and very strong. So when I do surgery to correct this oftentimes what I’m doing is removing some of this cartilage the upper portion here, we call that the cephalic margin, and that helps to give some definition in the upper portion of the nose. And then oftentimes we do some suturing techniques to bring those cartilages together to narrow that area.
