How Can Microneedling Benefit the Skin?

When your skin concerns go beyond what a regular facial or serum can offer, one of the first treatments to consider in restoring the tone and texture of your skin is microneedling.

Despite its intimidating name, microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that provides many skin-boosting benefits. The procedure’s effectiveness makes it an increasingly popular option for those looking to restore their skin.

At Columbus Facial Plastics in Columbus, Ohio, we customize our microneedling procedures to ensure you get the most out of any anti-aging treatment.

In your skincare consultation, the medical professionals at our practice work with you to discuss your skin goals and concerns so we can determine whether microneedling is the correct procedure for your skin.

If you’re concerned about your skin’s texture, tone, and overall radiance, microneedling may provide the perfect solution to rejuvenate your skin.

Why Does Skin Tone and Texture Change?

Collagen is a protein naturally found in the body, serving as part of the body’s connective tissue. It strengthens the skin, supports its elasticity and hydration, and supports healing in the body.

Collagen forms the infrastructure where the body holds elastin and hyaluronic acid. True to its name, elastin provides skin with elasticity, while hyaluronic acid binds to water particles, giving skin its fresh, dewy appearance.

Around the age of 30, the body naturally begins to lose collagen. Sun exposure, poor diet, or habits like smoking and drinking alcohol can expedite collagen loss. As you lose collagen, your skin begins to lose its natural fullness, it can start to sag and develop wrinkles and fine lines, and the skin can take on a dull, mottled appearance.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive collagen induction therapy. The purpose of microneedling is to trigger the body’s natural healing response, which stimulates an increase in collagen production.

Microneedling creates micro-injuries in the skin with tiny needles that pierce the top layers of the skin in a sterile, controlled fashion. The body doesn’t differentiate well between micro-injuries and more significant injuries, so when it sends fibroblasts to repair the damage, it sends more than enough to repair the skin.

As a result, skin benefits from increased collagen in the areas targeted through microneedling. The extra collagen creates thicker, tighter skin with a better tone and texture.

What to Expect from Your Microneedling Procedure

When you arrive for your microneedling procedure, the skilled team at Columbus Facial Plastics will start by deeply cleansing your face. Then, we’ll apply a topical numbing cream to decrease discomfort.

Once the numbing cream takes effect, we’ll apply a serum before passing a microneedling pen back and forth over your face to create micro-injuries and allow the serum to penetrate the skin deeply. After the procedure, we’ll apply more serum and other treatments discussed in your consultation.

While you want to spend the next few days babying your skin and avoiding UV rays, you can resume your normal activities after your treatment.

In the meantime, your immune system will be hard at work. First, the immune system will increase blood flow to the micro-injuries, creating new tissue and bringing nutrients and oxygen to the area.

Then, the body begins to develop new cells and blood vessels, rebuilding the damaged skin. Finally, the new tissues and blood vessels replace the damaged skin with fresh, radiant skin.

How Can Microneedling Benefit the Skin?

Microneedling targets the most common skin concerns that come with age. While most patients undergo treatments on their faces, microneedling benefits all skin, especially areas with texture concerns, like stretch marks and crepey skin. Some of the most significant microneedling benefits include:

Improving Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are one of the first signs of aging and usually signal that patients need more than just a facial to restore their skin’s youthfulness. Microneedling’s collagen induction effects create thicker, more elastic skin.

When skin is thicker, it’s more resistant to forming lines and wrinkles. Additionally, the added structure supplied by the collagen boost makes existing lines and wrinkles appear smoother and less visible.

Diminishing the Appearance of Scars

Whether your scar is from acne, surgery, or an injury, microneedling can help. The procedure creates microchannels in the skin, breaking down old scar tissue as it triggers the body’s healing response. As new skin cells and healing take over, skin’s texture improves, and your complexion becomes more even and rejuvenated.

Reducing Sun Damage

Too much exposure to harmful UV rays can lead to sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. These darker areas of the skin typically occur when your skin cells produce too much melanin in response to sun exposure. Microneedling can regulate melanin levels and help shed the skin’s upper layers.

When you pair your microneedling procedure with lightening creams, the skin’s tone becomes more radiant and even. Research suggests that microneedling may be the best option for patients looking to reduce sun spots and other signs of sun damage.

Shrinking Pores

Over time, pores in the nose, forehead, and cheeks can become enlarged and clogged with dirt and excess sebum. However, the increase in collagen from microneedling helps to plump the skin around the pores, making them almost disappear.

Improves the Effectiveness of Topical Products

The tiny channels produced through microneedling allow the skin to better absorb topical moisturizers, chemical peels, and other treatments. In addition, the skin soaks in creams and serums readily, allowing them to penetrate deeper into your skin.
