Everyone wants to have youthful, glowing skin. Dead skin cells and hairs on your face can dull your skin, however, making you appear older. One option that can give your skin a resurfacing boost is dermaplaning.
What is dermaplaning? Read more about this procedure, the dermaplaning benefits you can expect, and how Columbus Facial Plastics can help.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that removes a thin layer of your skin and gets rid of dead skin cells as well as fine hairs. To perform the procedure, we use an exfoliating blade.
Dermaplaning can help with the appearance of other skin conditions, too, like acne scars. Because it shaves away skin cells, the procedure allows newer and healthier skin to grow. It does not stop the aging process, but it can make your skin look smoother and more radiant.
We offer dermaplaning for a host of skin concerns, including:
- Acne scars
- Dull skin
- Dry skin
- Peach fuzz
- Sun exposure damage
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Actinic keratosis
We recommend adding serums into your dermaplaning treatment because removing dead skin cells allows your skin to absorb the serums better. Many of our clients get dermaplaning along with a chemical peel to enhance effects.
We can help you prepare the perfect treatment plan and schedule so that you can have regular skin cell turnover.
If you are in good overall health and have realistic expectations, you’re likely a fine candidate for dermaplaning. People with highly sensitive skin, severe acne, cancer, active infections, or eczema are not good candidates for this procedure. We can help you find an alternative treatment.
Dermaplaning Benefits
One of the most important dermaplaning benefits is that it allows serums, creams, and other treatment substances to be more effective. Newer skin can absorb anti-aging products more easily, transforming your skin care routine. Dermaplaning also helps your makeup go on more smoothly.
Dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types, especially dry skin. It works well for people who tend to have acne breakouts because it can unclog pores.
It can also boost collagen production, allowing your cell regeneration process to work more efficiently. Additionally, dermaplaning offers immediate results without having to worry about a long recovery process. Because it’s a quick treatment option, you can return to your life right after the procedure.
How to Prepare for Dermaplaning
The procedure starts when you schedule a consultation with us. We need to examine your skin and see if dermaplaning is the best option for you.
Tell us about any medications you take, including topical ones you use for skin conditions, and give us your full medical history. We will discuss your goals for the procedure and we may also take pictures of your skin to be able to offer comparisons.
Depending on your skin condition and your goals, we may also recommend other procedures that we can combine with dermaplaning.
To help prepare for your dermaplaning appointment, we ask that you stop using any exfoliants for at least five days before the procedure. You also want to stop using skin care products that contain retinol because they can make your skin more sensitive.
We also suggest that you add an antibacterial skin care product to your routine and that you stay out of the sun to avoid added skin sensitivity. Make sure to drink lots of water in the days leading up to your procedure.
Avoid shaving the treatment area for at least a couple of days to avoid razor bumps and irritation. You shouldn’t have any other facial procedures, like chemical peels, and you don’t want to wax or tweeze the treatment area.
Dermaplaning Procedure and Aftercare
When you come to your dermaplaning appointment, don’t wear makeup or any skin lotions. Although the procedure does not require anesthesia, we will provide a numbing cream before starting. It can take up to 30 minutes to take full effect.
For the procedure, we use a dermatome, which looks like an electric razor. It has a small blade that we move back and forth along your skin, shaving the top layer without making any cuts.
We usually apply a soothing gel to your skin. The procedure can last between 30 minutes and one hour. If you decide to combine treatments, it can take a bit longer.
Recovering from a dermaplaning procedure requires that you avoid sun exposure and that you wear sunscreen when you go outside. Avoid extreme heat as well.
You should avoid using exfoliants for the next few days, along with any retinol products. Skip swimming for at least three days after the procedure, since chlorine can irritate your skin.
You can apply makeup right after the dermaplaning procedure, though we do suggest that you wait a few hours to do so.
Dermaplaning results can last from a few weeks to a few months, depending on how many treatment sessions you receive and if you decide to combine it with other procedures. When you schedule your consultation, we can decide on the right treatment schedule for you.
