Xeomin and the Treatment of Expressive Wrinkles

No matter how much you try to avoid it, aging can take its toll on your skin in the form of fine lines, furrows, and folds. Many people aren’t sure where to go to treat these expressive wrinkles.

If you have moderate to severe frown lines between your eyebrows, Xeomin may be the solution you have been searching for.

What is Xeomin, and how can it help you get a more youthful appearance? Learn more about how these injectables work in our brief guide.

What Are Expressive Wrinkles?

Aging brings more fine lines, folds, and wrinkles to the skin. Each type of wrinkle has its own cause and a recommended treatment for it. Xeomin is used to treat expressive wrinkles — specifically, the frown lines (glabellar lines) that form between the eyebrows. These appear in the shape of two vertical lines that resemble the number 11.

What causes expressive wrinkles, though?

These lines develop due to repeated facial movements over a long period. Fine lines and folds grow more prominent as the skin ages and loses its youthful elasticity and collagen content.

As the muscles become accustomed to falling into these positions, the skin over the top of them begins to recall the movements. This results in lines etched into the skin.

As a result, you will notice more fine lines on your face unless you do something to relax the muscles beneath.

The good news is that there are injectables that can do just that. Xeomin is one of many neuromodulators that can reduce the appearance of expressive wrinkles.

How Does Xeomin Work?

Xeomin is an FDA-approved product that is made of botulinum toxin type A. This is the same core ingredient used in Botox injectables. However, Xeomin is purified, which sets it apart from other products on the market today.

Neuromodulators like Xeomin are different from other injectables, such as:

  • Juvéderm Volbella
  • Juvéderm Vollure
  • Juvéderm Voluma
  • Kybella

Juvéderm fillers improve volume in the skin to treat the deeper grooves caused by static wrinkles, while Kybella targets fat cells under the chin. You may be able to combine these injectables with Xeomin if you want to address multiple aesthetic concerns.

If you have tried Botox before but did not see the results you wanted, then Xeomin may be the next best choice. It is often effective in patients who did not respond to Botox due to the differences in formulas.

Xeomin targets the muscles that cause moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. It prevents these muscles from falling into their usual patterns, allowing the skin over the top of them to smooth out. As a result, the visible wrinkles in this area become less noticeable while the Xeomin is active.

In clinical trials, most patients saw at least a two-point improvement on a four-point scale. These numbers were assessed by both the treating doctor and the patient. In comparison, patients who received a placebo saw no effects.

When Will You See Results with Xeomin?

Many of our patients are eager to see the results of injectables like Xeomin, and they are often surprised at just how quickly they can appear. While you aren’t likely to notice a difference while you are still in our office, most people start to see smoothing occur as soon as three to four days following their injection.

Early signs that the neuromodulators are working start to appear in less than a week, but you will need to wait a bit longer for the optimal results. The maximum effect usually occurs around the 30-day mark.

One of the benefits of Xeomin is that it is quite long-lasting. In clinical trials, the average duration of the results was approximately three months. Some patients will notice that the results last even longer than this.

What Is Treatment Like?

Knowing what to expect from your treatment is key to helping you feel relaxed and prepared. You can start with a consultation with our medical team, who can answer any of your questions or address your concerns.

This will also allow us to create a custom treatment plan for you with the best possible products and applications. With so many different neuromodulators on the market, our evaluation will allow us to identify which ones will specifically address your concerns and give you the results you desire.

When you are ready, we will book your first Xeomin session. Treatment takes less than half an hour in most cases, allowing you to book your appointment for a long lunch break or amid an otherwise busy day. We won’t keep you waiting for your treatment.

Our nurse injectors will inject Xeomin into the muscles that are causing the frown lines between the eyebrows.

Once the injections are applied, you are free to leave and resume your day. There is no downtime required for these types of neuromodulators. You can drive yourself to and from your appointment, so the only thing that others will notice about your treatment is that your skin appears smoother and more youthful-looking in the weeks ahead.
