Can You Combine a Chemical Peel and Dermaplane?

Chemical peels and dermaplane treatments are both popular ways of achieving youthful, refreshed skin. But when performed in combination, these treatments deliver especially powerful results. Columbus Facial Plastics at The Sullivan Centre in Columbus, OH, offers several different types of peels, and we can design a treatment plan just for you that incorporates both of these approaches to skin rejuvenation.

Can You Combine a Chemical Peel and Dermaplane?

For many patients, combining these two treatments is not only possible, but it’s also the most effective way of noticeably improving their skin. That’s because dermaplaning clears away peach fuzz and dead skin cells and opens the pores, allowing the solutions used during a chemical peel to penetrate more deeply. These two treatments work in different ways to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin, and when performed together, they deliver a one-two punch.

Peels alone are not as powerful as peels performed in tandem with dermaplaning. The results achieved with dermaplane treatments are also not as strong when this treatment is performed by itself.

How Is This Treatment Combination Performed?

We’ll Start With Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning, in which a medical-grade scalpel is used to scrape away the uppermost layer of skin cells, is performed first. After cleansing your skin, we’ll hold the scalpel at a 45-degree angle and use it to make quick, gentle strokes across the skin. The goal of dermaplaning is to get rid of fine facial hair, dead skin cells, and debris, revealing the fresh skin just below.

Because of the use of a scalpel, dermaplaning is sometimes referred to as a scalpel facial.

The Chemical Peel Comes Next

Once we’ve opened up the skin and pores by dermaplaning, we’ll apply the peel. Peels continue the process of deeply exfoliating the skin, but they rely on the help of a chemical substance that is brushed on with a sponge.

Depending on the specific peel you’re receiving, we may leave it on the skin, or we may dissolve it after a few minutes and wipe it away. Either way, the chemical ointment will penetrate your skin and encourage it to start flaking in the days ahead. We may apply a calming serum after your session.

You Won’t Feel a Thing

Dermaplaning and peels are comfortable treatments that many patients find pampering. You’ll feel the light strokes being made with the dermaplaning scalpel and hear whispering as it crosses your dry skin, but you won’t experience any discomfort. You may also experience tingling as the chemical solution is applied to your face, but that sensation also will not be uncomfortable.

You’ll Probably Leave With Flushed Skin

These two treatments can be jointly performed in a little over an hour. At the end of your appointment, your skin may appear flushed, but this shouldn’t last long. Over the coming days, your skin could begin to flake. Deeper and more aggressive peels usually lead to more peeling over seven to 10 days, but patients who undergo lighter peels sometimes see almost no peeling. It will be important that you not pick at the peeling skin.

We’ll provide you with specific post-treatment skincare instructions depending on which peel you are given. But it’s a good idea to be gentle with your skin and avoid excessive sun exposure after your appointment. Patients who undergo deeper peels will be asked to refrain from vigorous exercise and the use of cosmetics for a brief time.

Your Skin Will Gradually Improve

Patients typically see their skin heal and renew during the weeks after treatment. If a series of lighter peels has been recommended for you, you can expect to see your results improve further after each session. Depending on the chemical strength of the peel you undergo, you may return for follow-up treatments once a month or once every 18 months.

What Type of Peel Is Right for Me?

Light Peel

A light chemical peel is a good choice for patients looking to freshen and brighten the skin. Because lighter peels don’t penetrate as deeply, they can be performed monthly, and many individuals opt to undergo a series of three to six sessions.

Lighter peels tend to result in less flaking. They’re a popular option for patients looking to optimize the appearance of their skin in advance of a big event, like a wedding or reunion. Lighter peels also work as a regular component of a long-term anti-aging plan.

Medium Peel

A medium peel is capable of rejuvenating the skin while also tightening it slightly. Patients who undergo medium peels also report a more even skin tone and smoother, brighter skin. Most medium peels can be performed as frequently as once a month.

Deep Peel

A deeper chemical peel will result in more flaking and extend the patient’s recovery time, but it also offers more dramatic results. A deeper peel can soften lines, even the skin tone, improve texture and rejuvenate the skin. A deeper peel can offer results that last one or two years, eliminating the need for more frequent follow-up appointments.

What Are the Benefits of Combining These Treatments?

Brighter, Fresher Skin

Combining dermaplane treatments with peels can completely rejuvenate your skin. Whether you’re worried about superficial lines and dull skin or want to aggressively fight back against early signs of aging, these two treatments can refresh your look. The appearance of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, rough skin, and crow’s feet can all be improved with this pair of treatments.

Skincare Regimen Super-Charge

Dermaplaning and peels both exfoliate the skin, clearing the way for the moisturizers you use at home to work effectively. Acne medications also become more powerful after you’ve experienced this treatment combination. And that’s not all. Once your skin has healed after these two treatments, you’ll have an easier time applying makeup.

Less Acne

By clearing away dead skin cells, removing dirt and oils, and opening up the pores, these treatments cleanse the skin. And because dermaplaning also gets rid of the facial hairs that can trap dirt and oils against the skin, your skin will stay clean longer. You’ll experience fewer breakouts as a result.

Easy Treatments

Many patients also find these treatments to be easy and enjoyable. Your skin won’t be pierced or treated roughly, and you’ll find it to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Compared to more invasive cosmetic treatments, dermaplaning and peels are also convenient options with very little downtime.

No More Facial Hair

Dermaplaning quickly and easily clears away fine facial hair, and you’ll be surprised how good you look once those hairs are gone. Your face will be soft and glowing. Those facial hairs also have a way of standing out, particularly when you’re wearing foundation. That won’t be a problem once you’ve undergone these treatments.

Less Visible Scars

By gently clearing away dead skin cells sitting on the surface, dermaplaning prompts the skin to renew itself in a way that can minimize the appearance of scars. Less visible scars are one of the many cosmetic advantages of this treatment combination.

Broad Skin Renewal

Unlike fillers and Botox injections, which hone in on very specific wrinkles and cosmetic concerns, the combination of dermaplane treatments and peels can comprehensively renew the skin. This approach broadly improves the look and health of the skin.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The combination of dermaplaning and peels is a terrific option for men and women looking to improve their skin’s appearance. The skin in the treatment area should be in good shape and free of active acne, sunburn, or other types of irritation. Patients should also not be pregnant. If you are also scheduling dermal fillers or botulinum toxin injections, both of which are offered by our practice, those should be scheduled separately.

If you’re interested in these treatments, call our office and schedule a consultation. This appointment will give us time to evaluate your skin and talk with you about your aesthetic goals. We’ll also be able to make a recommendation to you regarding the frequency of treatment and the strength of the peel you undergo. We can design an effective treatment plan for any skin type or tone.

Fresh, Rejuvenated Skin Is Just a Phone Call Away

If you’re ready to noticeably improve the look of your skin without resorting to surgery or other invasive measures, combining dermaplaning treatments and chemical peels may offer the results you’ve been looking for.
