Upper And Lower Eyelid Lift

Upper Eyelid Lift in Columbus: Rejuvenating Your Eyes for a Refreshed Look

Often the first signs of aging on the face appear around the eyes. The eyebrows tend to drop, the upper eyelids develop folds of loose skin, the lower eyelid fat pads create puffiness, and the skin below and around the eyes form creases and wrinkles from years of facial expression. There are several surgical and non-surgical interventions that can reverse some of these signs of aging, and in Columbus, Ohio you can opt for an eyelid lift that will give your eyes a refreshed and moreyouthful appearance.

An eyelid lift, also called a blepharoplasty , can rejuvenate your appearance by removing the extra skin, muscle and/or fat of your eyelids. There are two types of blepharoplasty:

  • An upper blepharoplasty removes the excess skin of your upper eyelids to open up the eyes and reveal more of the natural upper eyelid. Sometimes a strip of muscle and/or fat can be removed as well.
  • A lower eyelid lift can either remove/reposition the excess fat or remove a strip of loose skin or a combination of both to reduce the appearance of eyelid “bags.” Loose eyelid skin can be tightened and wrinkles can be reduced.

It is important to know that skin resurfacing for the lower eyelids is often an excellent option as well. We use both an erbium laser (Contour TRL by Sciton) for deep resurfacing and a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) 35% chemical peel for medium resurfacing. Both do an excellent job of creating a fresh layer of new, healthy skin. This can be done instead of or in addition to the surgical options above.

We all have pockets of protective fat around the eyes. Normally, a barrier holds back this fat. As we age (or in some individuals who inherit the trait), the barrier weakens, allowing the fat to push forward to create a puffy appearance. This can occur in both the upper eyelids and lower eyelids. As the fat pushes forward, it also contributes to the eyelid skin stretching.

UPPER EYELID LIFT COLUMBUS

Sagging or excess skin of the upper eyelids can create a tired or aged appearance, and an upper eyelid lift in Columbus, Ohio may be right for you. The aging process in general and specific anatomic features that are familial in nature can both play a role. Women often notice this excess skin when applying makeup. For both women and men alike, the extra eyelid skin can fold over the natural upper lid and eyelashes, leading to a droopy and tired appearance.

An upper blepharoplasty or eyelid lift removes the excess skin and sometimes a strip of muscle from the upper eyelids. Even the removal of a small strip of this delicate eyelid skin can have a big impact on the appearance of the eyes.

LOWER EYELID LIFT COLUMBUS

If you have excess lower eyelid skin or eyelid “bags,” a lower eyelid lift (a lower blepharoplasty) might be the right
procedure for you. If you have puffiness beneath your eyes due to fat pushing or herniating forward, Dr. Nogan will recommend removing and/or repositioning this fat. Many patients require some combination of skin removal and fat repositioning to correct the lower eyelid appearance. A careful history of any eye symptoms, conditions or prior surgeries as well as an examination in the office are critical to determining your candidacy for lower eyelid surgery as well as the most appropriate technique.

Remember that resurfacing with a laser or chemical peel is also a powerful tool for eyelid rejuvenation and that the upper and lower eyelid lifts can be performed at the same time when indicated.

THE BLEPHAROPLASTY PROCEDURE IN COLUMBUS, OHIO

In upper eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Nogan first marks the natural eyelid crease and carefully measures the amount of skin to be removed. He then makes an incision and removes the measured excess skin. A small strip of muscle is often also removed, and a conservative removal of fat toward the inner eyelid can be removed to improve puffiness in this area. He uses fine sutures to close the incisions, thereby minimizing the visibility of any scar. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in the office setting.

In lower eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Nogan makes an external incision just below the eyelash line or an internal incision along the conjunctiva of the inner lower lid. Excess skin can be removed through the external incision and herniated fat or eyelid “bags” can
be removed or repositioned through the internal incision. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be combined with a resurfacing laser or chemical peel to create tighter and smoother lower eyelid skin. The lower eyelid procedures can be performed under local or general anesthesia, often determined by surgeon and patient preference.

POST-OP RESULTS

In most cases, you’ll be able to return to work and resume normal activities after one week. A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses, as well as head elevation when lying down, will help your recovery. Sutures are typically removed after 5 to 7 days.

Dr. Nogan will advise you to wear sunglasses in the summer months following surgery in order to protect your eyelids from the sun and to help minimize scarring.

WHY HAVE AN EYELID LIFT?

Whether you desire an eyelid lift surgery for functional or cosmetic reasons, your choice of a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance. During your pre-surgical consultation, Dr.Stephen Nogan will examine you and ask questions concerning your vision, tear production, use of lenses, and your desires for eyelid surgery. Dr. Nogan will explain what you can expect from blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery and take a complete medical history. Your age, skin type, ethnic background, and degree of vision obstruction are factors that must be taken into consideration.

People with circulatory, ophthalmological, or serious medical conditions must rely on their own personal specialists to determine whether blepharoplasty is an option. A consultation with a facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Nogan can help you decide whether any additional complementary surgery can increase the success of the surgery. Dr. Nogan might, for example, recommend a simultaneous browlift to correct a drooping brow or skin resurfacing to remove the fine-line wrinkling around your eyes.

During your consultation, he will examine you to determine whether you may need a lower eyelid lift, an upper eyelid lift or both. After you and Dr. Nogan make a mutual decision to proceed with your eyelid surgery, he will discuss with you the technique indicated for your individual eyelid surgery outlining the type of anesthesia, the surgical facility, any supportive surgery, and the risks and costs of the procedure.

EYELID SURGERY POST-OP RESULTS

Eyelid surgery—whether on your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both—can result in a more youthful appearance and a less tired, more bright expression. This surgery will not make you look like someone else; often the results are more subtle rejuvenation.
