A weak chin can distort an otherwise attractive face. It can ruin your profile and lead to a lack of self-confidence. Chin augmentation using surgical chin implants adds to the underlying structure of your face to better balance your facial features and improve your facial harmony. As a result, you can regain your self-esteem.

Chin implant/chin augmentation surgery can change the appearance of a receding chin by increasing its projection. It can provide balance and a better sense of proportion particularly on the profile view.
There are several manufacturers of chin implants. For the most part, the implants we use at Columbus Facial Plastics are made from an inert solid silicone rubber material. This material is safe and has been used for many years, not only in chin implants, but in many artificial implanted medical devices.
Chin Implant / Chin Augmentation Procedure
When the chin is under projecting there are a number of surgical options to consider. The first option is orthognathic surgery to advance the lower jawbone. This can be a rather sophisticated and complex procedure which is usually necessary when your dentition is out of alignment. This procedure is generally preformed by an oral mazillofacial surgeon. The second option to consider for a weak chin is a genioplasty. With this procedure small saw cuts are made in the front part of the mandible and this section of bone is advanced forward. Small plates and screws are used to secure the bones new position. This is a permanent change like orthognathic surgery but foreign material is used for fixation which can become infected.
The third option which is the least complex is to place an implant under the chin soft tissue which gives the effect of advancing the chin pad. Chin implants come in many different shapes and sizes. Dr. Stephen Nogan will consult with you as to which is most appropriate for your specific situation.
To augment your chin, Dr. Nogan begins by making a small incision in your under your chin. A pocket is created over the chin bone just large enough to accommodate the implant.
Dr. Nogan then puts the chin implant in place and secures it. Finally, he sutures the incision closed.
Chin Implant Post-Op Results
The results are immediate. Most patients are very satisfied with their results, although it may take you some time to get used to your new appearance.
Dr. Nogan places the external incision in a natural skin crease under the chin. The resulting scar is very well hidden.
Chin Implant Risks
Chin implants are a synthetic material therefore like any implant, run the risk of infection. The risk of infection is quite small, particularly if patients are on perioperative antibiotics. Signs of infection are persistent swelling, redness and pain. Some patients may also notice purulent drainage coming from the suture line. Occasionally the implant can be saved by higher doses of antibiotics but when these symptoms persist the implant should be removed and can be replaced at a later time.
Chin implants are made of an inert material; therefore there isn’t a risk of an allergic reaction. If the implant shifts its position during healing, a second procedure to correct the asymmetry may be necessary. The nerve that supplies sensation to the chin maybe stretched during chin augmentation. This may lead to temporary or permanent numbness
The risks of complications with chin implants are rare. It’s important for patients to be fully aware of the risks. One way to minimize your risk is to consult with an experienced Facial Plastic Surgeon.
