Hello. I’m Dr. Michael Sullivan, facial plastic surgeon at the Sullivan Centre in Columbus, Ohio. I specialize in rhinoplasty surgery. If I had a nickel for every time one of my rhinoplasty patients said, “I don’t want my nose to look different,” or “I don’t want anyone to know that I’ve had rhinoplasty surgery,” I would be a pretty wealthy man.
I believe everyone that comes to see me for rhinoplasty is expecting a change. However, they’re expecting a positive result, a pleasant change. They want their nose to look like this was the nose that they were born with. I think it’s the fear of the unknown.
We look at celebrities on TV or in celebrity magazines and we see examples of bad results. This is what we’re wanting to avoid. That comes from actually consultation. When we meet in the office, I’m listening to what your goals and expectations are and I am giving you ideas about what a realistic result will look like.
Rhinoplasty is a structural change to the nose. I’m altering the shape of the cartilage and bone. So even the most minor surgery will create some change. However, the beauty is of that change will happen gradually over time and that’s why other people won’t necessarily be able to perceive that you’ve had something done.
When the cast is removed, after a week, the nose doesn’t look a lot different than what it did before because there is swelling. But over time that swelling will recede. So if we look at your picture before surgery and then six months after, we will see a pleasant change and I expect that you will be happy.
